Medicare’s annual enrollment period, or AEP, begins October 15th and ends December 7th.
During the Medicare AEP people enrolled in either a Medicare Advantage Part C plan or a Medicare Prescription Drug Part D plan can make changes to their plans for the upcoming calendar year.
People can make as many changes as they want during the Medicare AEP and whatever their last election is before the December 7th deadline is what will become effective on January 1st of the upcoming year.
During the Medicare AEP, it is a good idea to review your most up-to-date list of prescription drugs, making sure they are covered adequately on your Part D prescription drug benefit’s formulary.
If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Part C plan, in late September each year you will receive what is called the Annual Notice of Change or ANOC letter from your current insurance company. The ANOC letter compares the current year’s benefits to the upcoming year’s benefits, helping to inform you of any changes. If the changes to your current Medicare Advantage plan are significantly negative, you will be able to review other plan options during the Medicare AEP and select a different plan if necessary.
Regardless of whether you need to change your Medicare plans each year, we believe it is always a good idea to stay informed about your plan options and any overall changes to the Medicare system from year-to-year.
